Description
In this Algebra 1 course, students will be taught the full Algebra 1 curriculum as in Pearson's Common Core Algebra 1 textbook. Students may purchase this for the class, but it is not necessary. For the course, students may want a math notebook and pencils or pens to take notes on Power Points and solve problems with me. For the course, I will utilize Zoom for taking my course videos. I'll screen share a Power Point with notes and I'll use Microsoft Whiteboard for solving problems. Educational YouTube videos are included in the resources section to further emphasize certain points. These videos may include catchy songs and or movement which appeals to those auditory and kinesthetic learners. When I teach, I employ the "I Do, We Do, You Do" method for teaching. I solve a problem first, showing students how to solve a problem. Then, I solve a problem with the students telling me what to do while the students solve the problem with me. Lastly, students will solve a similar problem on their own. Unfortunately, the "We Do" portion is next to impossible when online teaching through lecture videos; however, I make an effort to ask students prompting questions when I feel a concept is particularly challenging. Additionally, I like showing students safety nets in math such as checking their work, re-solving, or plugging their answer back into the original problem. This course is set up in such a way that students will learn a concept, complete 5-10 homework problems related to the concept, and check their own homework. There are 9 chapters that will be covered. Each one has a designated number of lessons. There will be one mid-chapter quiz and one test associated with each chapter. Students will be able to take these assessments, and then grade the work themselves. I feel that students learn best when they grade their own work because they discover where it all went wrong or where it all went right. For quizzes and tests, I show the assignment through video and then prompt students to pause the video and complete the work. Once they finish, they are asked to play the video again. Then, I go over every problem on the assignment, so students can check the work they've accomplished. If you're homeschooling and need grading suggestions, I would select one of the following methods:1. Points Grading SystemUse the total points I have assigned for each quiz and test spoken in the videos. Make each homework assignment a completion grade of 5 points.2. Weighted Grading SystemTests (50%)Quizzes (30%)Homework (20%)I hope you choose to take this course with me! We will have a blast appreciating math and learning new things together.
